I wouldn't mind doing 10k intervals with full synthetic on a broken in engine with less than 100k miles. But you've gotta check your oil frequently. He probably drove it like a granny during the first 1000 miles, never broke in the seals and piston rings properly, and started burning oil very soon.

Thinner oils are a no no in the winter up north...Honda says 5W-20 now all year around but that's bullshit, they just say it for emissions and MPG reasons. The original service manual states that 5W-20 should not be used in temperatures below 20F.
