It's just easier when units of 10 are standard for everything...for distance as well as measuring liquids, solids, etc.
speaking of liquids, when dealing with water, 1cc = 1g = 1ml.

who knows what the fuck equals what in square inches, ounces, and fluid ounces.

also, lbs is flawed because it's a measure of weight (subject to effects of gravity) whereas grams is a measure of mass.
