Default Severance package, generally speaking

I was subject to a "reduction in force" which resulted in me being laid off from my job, which I had been at for 8 years, the last of which was spent in Portland, trying in vain to help get this regions operations in my department steady, while maximizing growth and revenue potential. To make a long story short, the RTS resigned and since i'm not a certified RTS our region was left without one, necessitating the reduction in force since not having a certified RTS onboard denies us the ability to submit claims to any government payor.

I have been offered a nice severance package due to my tenure and performance on the job. The problem is that because I am "rehireable", I can accept a position in the company within 90 days and retain my status as if I never left but I don't know how, if at all, this will affect my severance package. Has anyone had any experience with a situation like this and how did it play out?

I don't want to call HR about it because I don't want them to intentionally delay issuing the monies they owe me to avoid having to pay me should I decide to take either of the positions currently being offered to me by two managers in the company. I want the position, and want to retain my status, but I don't want to lose out on my severance as it was highly disrespectful the manner in which they handled the situation, not to mention quite an inconvenience.
