I have one Maxtor (30Gb ATA) that's been working since about '01 with no trouble, and I just bought another one (100Gb SATA) that was a snap to install and transfer files over. If you get a Maxtor make sure to get the latest software, version 4 I think.

I don't know anything about Seagate, so I can't help you there.
