I suspect more accurately the engien computer saw teh low oil pressure switch and the fuel and ignition before the engine reached higher rpms's to prevent damage due to oil starvation. If the VTEC systm failed to actuate due to low oil pressure, you would see a more gradual loss of engine power. whenever the power loss is abrupt, (other than the throttle cable breaking or complete engine failure) it's almost always a complete loss of ignition or fuel.
