at around 5,800rpm is when you should really hear the secondary butterflies open. Do you let the car warm up before you run it hard? Is your car throwing an engine code? Alot of times people get codes 21 or 22 which is malfunctioning vtec system. Try cleaning out your vtec solenoids and check your oil pressure.
