i work at a car repair shop and i deal with this all the time. that wont hurt your car to do, BUT...the check engine light is set by the manufacturer to come on at certain mileage's when certain services are due, such as radiator flush, tranny drain and fill, oil change etc...so if i were you i would take it to a shop and have them give it a once over to make sure nothings wrong.
