if the head is a b16a head, it sounds like you have a ls/vtec, which isn't a bad thing. it has a strong bottom end and good high end.
although might be a problem since you didn't do the work. it could be a pain not knowing all the quirks.
check the oil and make sure there is enough. vtec runs off of oil pressure.
it sucks if you bought a ls thinking it was a gsr. check the title next time.
