The Koran preaches peace except when an individual is being persecuted, and even then the fight must exclude harm to women, children, and innocent civilians. There's an informative article on it in National Geographic posted here:

The idea that the war in Iraq was caused by Islam is simply wrong. Saddam Hussein was a despot and is a psychopath, but he's also a secularist. His Baath party is known for secular Arab nationalism. Osama bin Laden has called him a "bad Muslim" and an "infidel." Donald Rumsfeld has met with Saddam more than bin Laden ever did.
