Default Distributor cap and rotor keeps going bad...

My '96 GSR has a problem with the cap and rotor on the distributor going bad. I bought the car back in April, and like 3 months later, the car started bucking and the tachometer gauge started jumping all over the place. The problem got progressively worse to the point where the car would'nt stay running for more than like 30 seconds to a minute. I brought the car to the shop, since I couldn't find the problem myself, and they found the problems to be the distributor cap/rotor. The wierd thing is that the cap looked ok, nearly new. Now, 2-3 months later, the car is doing the same exact thing. The car misses and bucks and any rpm and speed, and the tach is jumping all over the place again. This leads me to believe that there is something wrong with the distributor itself; like its eating/burning up caps and rotors. Also, when I brought my car in to the shop to have the cap and rotor replaced a couple months ago, they said that the distributor in the car wasn't the right one for the model year. They found out when they tried to put a replacement cap on and it would'nt exactly fit. They said it was from some other model...maybe Honda? Anyways, maybe the incorrect distributor is causing the cap and rotor to fail, or maybe something else? I can't drive my car right now, so I'm stuck with my motorcycle. I don't want to keep putting caps/rotors on the car if they are just going to keep failing on me. Any suggestions?
