The increase in problems could have a lot to do with the fact that cars are a-lot more advanced than they were 10-15 yeara ago.. and many of the new gadgets are new technology that hasn't yet had ther bugs worked out. The last two generations of Accord have been the most significant updates in Honda history.
Regarding the recall, most if not all manufacturers have issued recalls at one point or another, and some much more than others. Being that the Civic is all new for 06, it is not unlikely to see a recall. Generally, it can be good thing. Honda has had to issue very few recalls over the years, especially when compared to some other manufacturers.
The older Hondas had recalls too. My 96 had a couple, one of which was for the oil seal and the other was a warranty/recall for the emissions system.
As far as declining quality, I sure as heck don't see it! My 2006 Accord is a much better car than my 96 ever hoped to be... especially in terms of build quality. The materials are of higher quality, fit and finish is better, the chassis is more refined, the body has much better structural rigidity and is overall more substantial and sophisticated.
I have not yet heard of any reliability issues with the either the K24 I4 or the V6 engines.. so no problems there either.
Before I bought my Accords, I tested other cars in their class and price range. The Honda always came out on top. Things were no different with the 2006. While the American competition has greatly improved (and I'll admit, make a few pretty tempting automobiles) the Accord still beats them in quality and refinement.
I've owned a 1981 Honda Civic, 83 Accord, 96 Accord and now the new 06..
and each one has been a significant improvement over the last.
