If you have 17s with tires that are the same overall diameter as 15 or 16s, it should have similar rotational mass if the 17s with tires weighs the same as the 16s with tires. Of course that means you have to find lightweight 17s. Also you should get better cornering with 17s because of the less flexing of the tires unless you buy same profile height tires on your 16s or 15s, but then your spedometer will be off.
I have 17x7 rims, and its got a slight drop (~1 inch) with Eibach Pro-Kits and I have absolutely no rubbing issues whatsoever. Not sure about more than an inch. You probably might have some small issues if you have good shocks to compliment the springs.
