The newer (non Alternator) Transformers always have a themed gimmick running across the lines.

Transformers Armada had something called "minicons" which actually attached to the TF as a gun or weapon. Much like the G1 "Targetmasters", you'd always get 2 bots per pack.

Transformers Energon featured the "superlink" ability. You can take any 2 of the $10 autobots and make them into 1 super robot. 1 bot would be the super pants, the other would be the super top.

Transformers Cybertron has the "planet key". You'd take this key, jam it in a slot, and it'll unleash a super secret weapon. This weapon is basically their finishing move on the TV show.

The newer TF's all have a "trick" to them.

As far as packaging goes, there's all sorts of stuff in the newest line to help them sell.

July 2005: $10 Cybertron figure:

This guy came with his planet key and instructions.

October 2005: $10 Cybertron figure:

Now these come with the planet key, instructions, and a bonus DVD episode of the show.

December 2005: $10 Cybertron figure:

Now these come without the bonus DVD ... but are packed with a bonus mini TF.

When compared to G1, there's no more stickers or red visor. The cutout tech specs have also been replaced by a heavily glossed baseball card with the complete information.
