The throwout bearing is always spinning.

When you depress the clutch, it puts a load on it and will quiet it down if it squeaks with the pedal out.

The main question is: when the clutch is pressed, does the sound immediately go away, or go away a few seconds later? That would be a way to determine if the throwout bearing is bad, or if something internally in the tranny is bad.
