Think baseball cards, comic books, dvds, videogames ... it's like any other collectible hobby.
As a kid, you grew up with them, but beat the snot outta the toy. Now, the exact ones from your child hood are being re-released (reissued) but with nicer display packaging.

now they open like a book cover to show the toy, some information, and everything that came with it.
so when we're talking transformers, 90% of the time, it's about finding the reissued pieces for display.
