Default modifying the s2k makes it slower???

I have recently been doing some research on which mods to do to my s2k. Of course the obvious I/H/E comes to mind. But as i was looking at headers and exhausts i noticed that the dyno charts only showed a peak increase of maybe 2 to 4hp per mod at like 8800rpm, but the midrange(5000-7500) showed consistant losses sometimes of up to almost 10hp. So in theory that would make the car slower would it not? The only people who really had dyno charts were comptech.

So are there other companys who make mods that will help the s2000 in the lower midrange where it needs it most, or is forced induction and nitrous the only way to go. I would like to know what mods actually work, not what is most/least popular or most/least expensive.
