I see where your coming from and if i had the money and time I would convert it to OBD-1. But since i dont have it my only options are to either get a VTEC controller to activate the VTEC or find one of the few OBD-0 VTEC ecus like the b16 ecu - but then i gotta be careful how high i rev.
and believe it or not the gains are somewhat decent (obviously not as big as a decent engine swap) when u are using the d16Y8 head, intake manifold and half of the Y8 gasket on a d15 block. the compression is pretty high....but then again it all depends on what your used too
