No link. It's just a scientific principal. In a combustion engine, the parts are going to expand and contrapt at different rates due to differentiating temperatures. There has to be some sort of design entity to counter this. Those interlocking fingers in the pivot surround each other, and as a whole, are surrounded by a wall on each side. All that solid metal on solid metal contact is going to cause interference and they are going to scrape away at itself until there is a gap. From there, the combustion chambers lose their air tight qualities and the fuel/air mixture wont be properly compressed.
