Sounds like what I like to call the tower of power (not to be confused with the 70's porn flick). This is where the coil hits the distrib and is the likely culprit. Cop another distrib and be on your way. If it happens again, your coil is giving up too much power or your alternator is giving up too much.
You can check the alternator with a Voltimeter. It should read between 11.6 and 13.8 volts (this is a rough estimate). Don't check the coil because you'll fry your voltimeter unless it is of industrial or commercial quality.
