Default '91 Accord AC Conversion

Hello,
I'm new to the forum as my wife's hand-me-down rust free GA Accord has been
relatively trouble-free in the 1 1/2 years we've had it. (Transmission & ignition igniter were at least straight forward!) Last summer the AC worked but was not bone-chillingly cold. This summer it's just marginally cooler than outside air temp. A quick re-charge w/R12 would probably suffice, if it were available. My local indie auto tech thinks a conversion to R134 could
be made w/o replacing the condenser. He thinks a thorough vacuming of the system would be enough! I'd like opinions on this and also anything else to look out for in a conversion. (incompatible o'rings, seals, correct oil, etc.)
Thanks,
Tom Heitzman (whose wife is sweltering in newly tropical upstate NY!)
