It's a sad comment on the state of society when we don't help those in need...on the assumption that they're running a scam.

But the sad fact is, the ones with "sob stories" probably are scamming people.
I give to charities like Goodwill and the Salvation Army... foundations that are well-known and responsible. If you dole out money to some guy on the street, what's to prevent him from blowing it on booze or drugs?
I'm sorry if I sound cold-hearted... but if someone is truly down and in need of help, there are plenty of private charities and governmental programs available to provide assistance.
