Well, if you are looking for go and not show, I wouldn't waste money on the basic bolt ons (I/H/E) on that 1.7L non vtec. It puts out 115hp and with I/H/E you would get a max of around 125hp (still less than an EX at 127hp). Maybe save the money for a swap? There have been people who finally swapped in a K20 into the 7th gen civic. It's not an easy (or cheap) job, but can be done and mounting kits might be released soon.
Is it a manual or an auto? If it is manual you can look into small shots of nitrous or a turbo at low boost. You could still go nitrous or turbo if you have an auto, but I doubt that tranny would last long. Honda's auto tranny's weren't meant to handle much more power.
