B16 sounds like what you need. It's a bit more powerful than any stock D-series, I still get around 29-32mpg, and it's been reliable.
werd and the rod stroke ratio is much better for reving than the b18 (which is the main reason why the k20 is so hyped now is becuase of it's PERFECT r/s ratio)
