If you don't it causes the tank to rust from the inside (making it weaker and weaker over time). Eventually it will do just that (explode). Glad no one was hurt.
My dad knows that. He can explain better as to what happened. My dad's been doing this kind of work & messing with air compressors for well over 32 years...so he doesn't need to read the instructions, unless the new tank is unlike any one he's used before. He does drain the water, in fact he checks the tanks every monring when he gets to work...that's why he cut the spare one on yesterday...because when he checked them, he realized his main one didn't work.
