Last time i checked the fuel lines run from the top of the tank to the bottom (like a straw). the dirt settles on the bottom of the tank. If u run the tank empty, when you rip around corners chances are your splashing gas from side to side in the tank allowing the dirt particles up into the fuel system.
you asked if it was common for injectors to go bad. it is only common among cars that run low on gas often.
