I did mine with a hammer, screwdriver and a chisel, took forever but worked alright. I know a few people who spread dry ice over the tar and just smack it with a hammer a few times and it will break apart and fall away. Much faster and usually comes out cleaner. I weighed all the tar I removed from a '92 CX hatch (only tar on the front floorboard under your feet) and it was a grand total of 3 lbs.
