Yeah think its called a Carnet you can keep and drive it for a year limited to I think 2500 miles. I think you are required to post a bond If you don't send it back after one year the DOT can seize the car and crush it. A Carnet is used for research purpose and not really practical for a private citizen to keep a grey market car in the states. Neuspeed did this a few years ago with the first VR6 GTi so they could get a head start making parts



All these part would have to meet DOT specs:

Headlights (must be marked)
Taillights (must be marked)
Side markers (must be marked)
Turn signals (must be marked)
SRS system
All glass (must be marked)
Emissions for EPA and or my stringent CA standards if your bring it to California
If its made after 1995 it must be OBDII to start with to meet above standards
Must run on unleaded gas and have restrictor in gas fill
Seat belts must meet DOT standards
Bumpers must meet DOT standards (and sometimes the only way around this is to buy U.S spec ones
Bumper and headlight height must meet DOT specs


You would have to find a registered importer to convert and certify the car for all the above specs plus emissions and if its OBDII forget it, the certification process will be more then the car is worth. Those companies that import Skylines but a lot of time money and research into getting them to meet the above specs. Which is why they get big $$$ when they sell them
