Having the fuse that far away from the power source is not safe. If you are going that route, fuse the main power wire at THE MOST 18" from the battery post. Then re-fuse again at the distribution under the dash...(if you are going to use that idea)

And to add, a 6-8 gauge wire isnt that big. If you want to go with that idea, I would go with a 4 gauge, it will give more headroom in the future.
