To replace the knob, you need not take off the dash. Just pull it straight out, and swap with a junkyard one. Its mounted on a half circle piece of plastic, and if the knob developes a crack, it will spin freely about this half circle. I actually reused mine by going to town on it with electrical tape wound very tightly around the broken knob. On mine however, the rack and pinion-esque contraption that opens and closes the hot air vent was stuck, so I did have to take off the front fascia of the dash. For this I used a Chilton's (Haynes) manual. It just tells you where all the stupid screws are. I also had a squeek, so I took the front of the dash off for two reasons.
