My high school had lunch accounts for students, and I graduated 5 years ago. The parents (or the kid) put money in the account, the kid punched their student ID number into a keypad at the register to pay.

Acutally now that I think about it, my middle school had the same system I think starting when I was in 8th grade. So that would've been the '95-'96 school year.
