Yes, when one joins the armed forces you put your life at risk, whether it's during wartime or peacetime. There are many dangerous jobs that can hurt or kill people everyday. I know from my own experience that aboard an aircraft carrier is not the safest living environment. My first year we had a plane go down during flight operations off the CA coast, and two plane crewmembers were lost. In my own department, we were in charge of conducting underway replenishments and handling that evolution was sketchy indeed. I've got pics somewhere but I'll have to look.
