There usually should be no damage to the stereo by disconnecting the connector.
But there is a constant +12V source to the stereo, check the battery backup fuse.

Since you cannot scan the stations, confim the antenna lead is connected.

By the way, since you removed the stock stereo, it is a good time to get a nice aftermarket stero.
