Banged on it could have been the problem. you may have trashed the linkage internally. basicly, take the linkage off the trans again, pull it back and forth on the trans side. you should feel it click 3 or 4 times one way. if not you trashed the trans. if u feel it clicking then your linkage has excessive play in it and does not firmly press the shift rod.
