This is true for most unsponsored applicants, you need to show financial stability so that you don't become a burden on the state. The other option is to get a sponsor, who guarantees your financial situation. A lot of employers will sponsor immigrant workers, so it is possible to get accepted as a U.S. citizen without being rich. Relatives and friends are also good sponsors. My parents were sponsored by my dad's workplace at the time.
