Well, yeah. If you're dependent upon the dealer for everything, running costs will be higher for any used car. Since you've owned and wrenched on many a BMW, I'll defer to your estimates on running costs.
All I'm saying is that an E36 M3 selling for the low teens has probably seen a lot of use. Also, a "bargain" M3 may not have been maintained as well as one selling at a higher price.
In my opinion, it's false economy to buy a car that has been driven hard unless you've got the funds to cover the needed repairs and maintenance.
