I agree and disagree. I have never had a credit card, but my credit score is over 800 (barely). I have just used my finances wisely, paid every bill in full every month, and never went past a 35% outgoing to incoming.

Well I agree in most cases, but I think that if something ever did happen, I would go to the bank and get a sig loan or a second mortgage before I got a credit card. Lower APR over a longer period of time, and more flexibility in general.
