I coated the hell out of it. Twice, and let dry overnight. I think I'm safe. I meant to wax it too, but since it's not exposed, I think I'm fine.
PS, a word of caution. When putting the bolts and nuts in be very careful not to drop them into the trunk bracing. You'll never get them out. I saw this problem before starting. Stuff some papertowls in those openings just in case.
