long duration and high overlap cams will work the best with high compression pistons. with heavy overlap intake air is actually coming into the combustion chamber and then going straight out through the exhasut valve, resulting in less intake air available for compression. That lose of air resulits in a pressure lose when the pistons comes up to compress the mixture. Higher compression pistons make up for that lose and takes more advantage of the heavy overlap design of the cams.
