If you listen to the commentary there is some talk of a lot of debate in having him play that role. They felt he was too young and inexperienced for that type of role and almost cast it to someone else but a last minute gamble was made and it set his career into new realms.
Yeah I saw that, goes to show how as an actor you have to be able to morph yourself into any character. Take Jennifer Connelly for example, you have her playing extremely powerful roles in A beautiful mind, Requiem for a dream and Dark city and then you have the Hulk. Almost seems rather silly that one would put a movie like that on their resume.
