Smiths have a tendancy to be heavy (except for the New SW99s, which are modeled after Glocks) since they are pretty much solid metal. My service weapon weighs about 10 lbs

(ok, its an exaggeratioin). If you're looking at something small (subcompact size), I'd check out the Glock 26, Kahr K9/P9/Mk9/Pm9, Springfield XD Subcompact, Walther P99, and maybe even some of the little Keltecs. If you want something slightly bigger (Compact size), pretty much all of the guns I listed have larger versions available. However, in the compact size, the best one out there is the Heckler & Koch USP 9 Compact. You can't beat it in terms of quality, accuracy, and durability. The only drawback is that it costs $$$$$. Another excellent compact model to check out would be the Sig Sauer 239. Its right up there with the USP. H&K also makes the P2000 SK which is sort of in between a Compact and Sub compact.
