Sounds like brake fluid - especially if the pedal got mushy and had to press down more. When was the last time you had the brakes fluid flushed? One little air bubble could turn into a huge one with one good hard stop cause it will expand. Also water in the lines could boil causing water vapor and air to form in the lines.

Yeah, I am pretty sure the brake fluid has never been done. I'll probably do that when I have some time and money. I keep telling myself to do the fluid and rear disc and stainless lines at the same time, but how much does a brake fluid change cost, like $30? Not much wasted really.
