If he simply measured open-circuit voltage then he didn't really measure the state of charge of his battery.

If the battery cables are loose or corroded, then the jumper cables might bypass that problem.

If the starter is going bad, then maybe it's dumb luck or maybe hooking up the cables disturbs it enough to run again.
