It's a classic urban legend.

In a nutshell, crazy guy somehow gets a hold of six JATO rockets and mounts them to the roof of his 60's Chevelle (or other similar size car).

Now JATO stands for Jet Assisted Take-Off. :eek3: JATO rockets were (and to my knowledge are still) used on occasion to assist C-130 Hercules military cargo planes when taking off from a short runway. So if 12 rockets are enough to give aid to a large cargo plane, you can imagine the amount of thrust produced by just one of 'em.

So, crazy guy gets up to 90 or so on a isolated straight section of desert highway, fires off the JATO rockets simultaneously and promptly loses control of his car. The story says that sherrif's deputies only find the smoldering wreckage some 90 feet off of the ground, embedded in a cliff face a couple of feet.
