When I was 16, I simply filled out an application and dropped it off. I'm sure that I used a typewriter to fill it out, rather than handwrite it. It seems like a little thing, but that kind of attention to detail makes a big difference. That summer I worked at that Dodge dealership 6 hours a day and took driver's ed a few days a week. After both those things ended I went to space camp for two weeks. (I don't care how many times people call me a dork -- Space Camp rocked.)
The job at the BMW dealership was as a service advisor. I filled out an application, but I also knew a salesman there who recommended me. That was the best summer job I've ever had. It was something like 50 hours a week, but I learned an enormous amount, made very decent money, and cultivated some business relationships that I still have today.
