Please, do not use pliars/vice grips on those parts. You will not only marr them but you also run the risk of dropping metal shavings into the head. Just use a rubber mallet. At the risk of sounding vain, I built my own motor and it makes almost 400 whp and drove it from CO to AZ and back without a problem... please take my advice on this.
