btw, how would one ground themselves when standing @ a gas pump?

Most gas pumps now have a grounding strap built into the handle or use non-conductive plastics to keep a discharge of static electricity from igniting fuel vapors when filling up. So it's very unlikely that you'll have to deal with a refuelling fire. To be safe, you can ground yourself simply by grasping the open fuel filler door before removing the gas cap.
