Has anyone ever painted their stock gauge needles?

I want to keep the stock cluster and look but paint the white needles red (like the Si's). I want red, preferably as bright and reflective as possible (for high visibility). And tips?

I'm afraid of damaging the needles, and the paint being too heavy after the coat is on.
