Well of course they're going to try to screw you on trade in, used cars (along with service) are how dealerships make the bulk of their money. Trading in is never a good idea if you're looking to get max return...it's much better just to spend the extra time and sell privately.
Edmunds.com has great pricing info...invoices, MSRPs and their 'TMV'.
PITR: I used to sell cars (I try to forget about when I did that but sometimes it's helpful), and bringing in documents like that isn't a good negotiating tool

They have to make their money some how, and either they're going to screw him on his trade in or the car he's going to buy. Or both if he doesn't negotiate.
