Without PS it should be too tight. So it's hard for me to just tell you to get a PS pump and problem solved. You can either get a free inspection from a shop (Midas and Meineke do it free, at least in my town they do) or buy a PS pump from an auto salvage for cheap (probably no more than $30) and see if that helps.
