Some cars require higher octane. Higher octane means the gasoline has a higher resistance to detonation (a.k.a. knocking, pinging, etc). Some cars are programmed to run more ignition timing advance if they have higher octane in them, but the increase in power is incremental at best. Just run whatever the minimum recommended octane for your car is.

So me, I run 87.
